first plantings

April 11, 2008

in the past week, i’ve started a ton of seeds, mostly in peat pots. i’ve been using a premixed bag of seed starter.

on saturday, april 5, i planted the following peat pots (nearly all are organic seeds, and i ordered everything from fedco.
black seeded simpson lettuce (42 days, organic, sow early, succession plantings) (2 pots)
antares oakleaf lettuce (48 days, organic, sow in early spring, succession plantings) (2 pots)
winter bloomsdale spinach (47 days, organic, sow as early as possible) (1 pot)
aurora mix orach (38 days, organic, sow in spring) (1 pot)
thai hot peppers (82 days, organic, start indoors april, transplant after frost) (2 pots)
ho chi minh hot peppers (68 days, ecologically grown, start indoors april, transplant after frost) (2 pots)
pruden’s purple tomatoes (72 days, organic, start indoors april, transplant after frost) (2 pots)
aunt ruby’s german green tomatoes (85 days, organic, start indoors april, transplant after frost) (2 pots)
jubilee tomatoes (80 days, organic, start indoors april, transplant after frost) (2 pots)
suhyo long cucumber (61 days, organic, sow after frost, 6 per ft, rows 4 ft apart) (2 pots)
atomic red carrots (74 days, organic, sow in well-prepared seed bed, thin to 1″ apart) (1 pot)
early summer crookneck squash (58 days, organic, sow 4 per hill after frost, thin to 2 best) (2 pots)
chives (perennial, organic, sow in spring) (1 pot)
sweet basil (annual, organic, start inside 3 wks before last frost) (1 pot)
rosemary (slow to germinate, start indoors) (1 pot)
common mint (perennial, start indoors, transplant after danger of frost) (1 pot)
tashkent marigolds (annual, organic, start indoors in april, transplant after frost) (2 pots)
ziar breadseed poppies (annual, organic, direct seed outdoors in spring, gather dried seedheads) (1 pot)
jewel mix nasturtiums (annual, organic, full sun after frost, avoid excessive nitrogen) (2 pots)

and on monday, april 7, i planted:
misato rose radishes (60 days, organic, sow in rows 18″ apart, thin to 3-4″ apart) (in a 6 X 8? cardboard container – it was packaging for a wireless router, heh)
more common mint (in a 3″ diameter lotion pot from lush)
and more jewel mix nasturtiums (in a 5″ diameter feta cheese tub)

today i discovered my first sprout! it’s from one of the spinaches, probably the aurora mix orach. if all goes well, i’ll be eating it around may 13.

this weekend, i’ll buy soil and bigger containers, with mom’s help for transportation. we’ll probably do some direct planting of the spinaches and lettuces, which should be grown now, before the weather gets too nice.

harvest predictions:
orach will be the first thing i’ll eat, around may 13.
followed by the simpson lettuce, around may 17.
bloomdale spinach and oakleaf lettuce, may 22-23.
crookneck squash, june 2.
cucumbers, june 5.
ho chi minh hot peppers, june 12.
purple tomatoes, june 16.
carrots, june 18.

i’ve yet to plant: red russian kale, tenderleaf hardy green, wrinkled crinkled crumpled cress(!), and german thyme.
